I grew up and went to high school and college in South Carolina. I was a basketball player in high school and played pretty much every intramural sport I could in college. I married my beautiful wife a little over a year ago and we have a great family with 2 dogs. I enjoy learning and working on new athletic skills, which is why I like CrossFit. There is always another level to work on, whether it be gymnastics skills or fine tuning a lift. I also really enjoy hiking, camping, photography, basketball, running, writing, reading, and travelling.
What were you doing before CrossFit? For fitness I was mostly running and occasionally lifting weights (curls, bench press, occasional leg days, etc.) Personally, I was working towards my DPT degree in St. Augustine, FL.

Our Athlete Of the Month for October is: Donna Coutu

When did you join BMCF?  I think it was 3 years ago now

Favorite WOD? I don’t really have a favorite, I like WOD’s with push press, push jerks and or handstand push ups.

Least favorite WOD? WOD’s that require  a lot of ankle dorsiflexion.  Running, rowing or high reps trashes my ankle.

Favorite lift? Bench press or strict press, it’s a toss up

Lease favorite lift? Squat clean, I have not mentally overcome this movement.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, sports, interest, etc.)  I’ve been a mom for 32 years now, Tom Hellwig is my youngest and shares my passion for Crossfit.  I’m been the controller for a law firm out of Texas for 18 years now and have worked from home here in Montana since 2006.  When I came to CrossFit I had been in a walking boot for about 9 months.  Theperineal tendon in my left ankle snapped and has been repaired to only 30%tf it’s former glory.  I had to give up hiking, biking, snowboarding so I bought a Malamute (Heidi) and can enjoy dog-scootering and sledding.  I’ve recently acquired a horse and am beginning to experience that level of covering distance.

What were you doing before CrossFit? Water aerobics

What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit workout? Corey is trying to kill me!

Biggest goal you have achieved thus far in your CrossFit career?  The biggest goal I set out to achieve is to regain strength, flexibility and muscle tone to gain a better quality of life. I’ve been through 3 nutrition challenges and this latest has where I’ve achieved the most success.  I’m stronger and leaner than I’ve been in 10 years. I have more energy and am seeing amazing results every week at the box.  For someone my age it’s been HUGE!

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit?  The community.  We are each of us different in age, goals, capacities and opinions, yet when we come together there is an amazing sense of unity.

What advice would you give to a new athlete just joining BMCF?  Leave your ego at the door and modify at first so as not to injure or more importantly over do it to the pint of discouragement. If you have not been involved in any exercise regimen for some time now be patient with yourself you will get there.

Words to live by or Favorite Quote?  Love one another as Christ loves us.

What were you doing before CrossFit? I started CrossFit June 2011.  Before CrossFit, I was just running…ugh.

What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit workout? I can’t remember…I am guessing they weren’t good thoughts, but it didn’t stop me from coming back for more.

Biggest goal you have achieved thus far in your CrossFit career?  Too many to say!  It is amazing how much I have accomplished since I started.  That is what is so great about it!  Every day, even the ones that don’t seen that great, are stepping stones to achieving any goal.

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit?  Community!  I am so grateful for the friendships I have because of CrossFit.

What advice would you give to a new athlete just joining BMCF?  Just keep showing up!  You will never regret coming, but you may regret it if you don’t.

Our Athlete of the Month for April is: Amanda Marlin

I sometimes can’t even believe the differences in Amanda since she has started CrossFit. When she first started she was recovering from a back injury and I remember her using the PVC pipe and then we moved onto the 11# bar for workouts for quite some time. As she started getting stronger her previous injuries began feeling a ton better. She began to see incredible gains both in strength, gymnastics and life in general. She can handstand walk with the best of them, her pull ups are beautiful, her handstand push ups are awesome and she recently conquered the bar muscle up. In addition to her gymnastics movements she has seen some huge strength gains and did almost every workout in the Open Rx (those pesky double unders….) and PRd her clean in 16.2 and did it multiple times. She also did 55 reps of DL at 155# which was about 90% of her 1RM going into it. She is always smiling and I love seeing her come through the door! Not only has she seen some huge physical gains but we have seen gains in other areas of her life as well. Saturdays went from something that was intimidating to her favorite workout of the week! We love having you as part of our CrossFit family Amanda!

Nate has burst onto the scene at Big Mountain CrossFit, becoming a regular at the 5:15 AM class immediately. Best yet when Nate beats you at the WOD, you still like him for that winning smile and charm.

I am… trying to lose weight and eat better.

Our Athlete of the Month for October is: Savannah

Savannah is not only a great athlete but an all around amazing human being. She shows up at the gym EVERY day even if she doesn’t really like the workout with a great attitude and ready to work hard. Her power cleans are beautiful and we all hope to one day be able to pedal an Airdyne like her! She is also an amazing motivator and companion for workouts. She always has positive and encouraging words for those around her said with sincerity and a smile on her face! She is the first person to celebrate in other’s successes with them and is always happy.

Here’s some more about Savannah:

When did you join BMCF?

December 2012

Favorite WOD?

Isabel has all of my favorite things and was not something I knew I could do. Fast, barbell only, and heavy. I really surprised myself this day, I was able to do this wod Rx far better than what I had hoped for. It was a superhero day. It was one of those days that remind me how far I have come.

Least Favorite WOD?

It’s going to be a bodyweight wod… Chelsea. I have never done it Rx, but even scaled Chelsea stands out as one of my hardest days.

Favorite lift?

It’s almost too hard to choose! Push Press.

Least favorite lift?

Split Jerk. Too much thinking involved.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, sports, interest, etc)

I live in Whitefish with my boyfriend and our two dogs who are spoiled. I work at Sportsman and Ski Haus selling big kid toys to outdoor enthusiasts. I like mountain biking, alpine skiing, and cross country skiing. I also work at The Wave and am a Spinning instructor. I am a creature of habit, I love routine. I’m an all or nothing kind of person. 100% go or 100% take it easy. I’m addicted to Netflix and coffee. I’m an optimist.

What were you doing before CrossFit?

I was cross country mountain bike racing and racing in off-road triathlons.

What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit workout?

Muscles that I never knew existed were sore before I was even home from my first workout and I knew I had to go back.

Biggest goal that you have achieved thus far in your CrossFit career?

It’s a goal I didn’t know I had until it was reached. I have to say my biggest achievement is the confidence I have gained in myself through CrossFit. Trying new things and surprising yourself with what you can do does wonders for a person. The way I carry myself has changed because I am proud of what I have done, what I know I can do, and the fact that I am always working to better myself.

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit?

The community. So much more than coaches and people I work out with. The athletes at the box are people I have gone through mental struggles with and have celebrated victories with. They become family.

What advice would you give to a new athlete just joining BMCF?

To come regularly, especially on the days that you don’t want to and not to take yourself too seriously. Learn to laugh at yourself and shake off the hard days.

Tell us something we don’t know about you.

I can wiggle my ears!

Favorite dessert?

Cherry Pie

Fill in the blank:

I like… fuzzy blankets
I eat… a lot!
I do… not like people with bad attitudes
I am… a night owl
