First I want to share an article Kimberly saw the other day in WOD Talk Magazine.
Researchers in the Department of Kinesiology at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, recently surveyed 144 CrossFitters (56 males, 88 females) about what motivates them to keep coming back for more WODs. The results, published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, showed that men were motivated significantly more by their performance in comparison to others', while women's goals tended to have more to do with self-improvement and mastery of skills. Interestingly, those with shorter membership spans tended to be more mastery focused. The lesson here? Box owners interested in member retention should encourage competition, particularly among female CrossFitters. Because what's the use of mastering a skill if you can't crush others with it?"
So what does this have to do with anything? It has to do directly with the Open. I am so so proud of everyone that competed this year. I know there were a lot of you that were hesitant to sign up and it was a HUGE step for you to take but you all did AMAZING. We saw TONS of PRs including first chest to bar pull-ups, first double unders, first 65# OHS, DL PRs, muscle ups, toes to bar…but it was more than that. It was a lesson that we all learned about life. Life sometimes sucks and is hard but as Isley so eloquently put it during the thruster/burpee WOD "CrossFit says f*$&ing finish life whether it makes you cry or not." We learned what it feels like to struggle through a WOD that we maybe didn't want to do to begin with. We were not longer able to hide behind scaling or like the last WOD, the clock. It exposed us and made us vulnerable but we all made it through and are stronger physically and mentally because of it.
I admit that for me the Open didn't go as I wished it had for me this year between being sick throughout the whole thing and this darn foot issue but I don't regret a moment of it. It showed me where I need to focus my training this coming year and what I need to work on. This brings me to the next topic: HOMEWORK
Yes, I said HOMEWORK. I want everyone to take a page in their workout journal and write down what you think went well for you in the open and where you think you saw some weaknesses. We are going to have a planning and goal setting class in about a month where we will start to plan the shape of our programming for the coming year and also add in some individual training where you can attack your own weaknesses. If you didn't compete in the Open this year I would love for you to record some thoughts and ideas on why you didn't…what did you think would hold you back.
Overall I am more than proud of each and every one of you. Keep in mind that most of you are very new to CrossFit as you all started with us 2 years ago. For the results we have seen in such a short time I am excited about what the future holds for us as a gym and for each and every one of you as an individual.
